The Pleasure of Plants

It is spring time, the weather is getting warmer, and the flowers are blooming. This time of year really makes me enjoy plants. In Toronto, I would stop on the sidewalk to take pictures of the beautiful trees and flowers, now here, they are in my own yard. The perks of living in the countryside is that you get to see them everywhere. I enjoy gazing at the freshly bloomed blossoms outside the window on my drive to and from work each day. Greenery and good weather gives me a sense of happiness.
I believe plants are one of the best decorations to have in a house. I love having a variety of plants in my own room, although I kind of suck at taking care of them, and my one window does not face in the direction of the sun. Regardless, I try, and I cherish them while they last. I especially enjoy plants with long leaves or strings. I used to have a couple spider plants. I think they are one of my favourites. The long streaks of green drooping down the sides of the pot are very pretty to me, and they remind me of a water fountain. They are relatively easy to take care of, are very aesthetically pleasing, and add a bit of liveliness to my bedroom.
Recently, I have been thinking a lot about orchids. I have always leaned more towards greenery than flowers. Maybe because they are easier to take care of. But something about orchids has recently struck my fancy. I have seen pictures of well taken care of orchids with numerous blooms, and I just think they are so classy and beautiful. I love the variety of mixed colours they come in, the shape of their petals and stems. Everytime I am in a grocery store, like Walmart, and I see one, I get the strong urge to buy one. Maybe I will, and cherish it over the summer.
The downside to having plants is that I move between Toronto and Nova Scotia. If I get a plant here, I am unable to bring it with me and cannot take care of it. My limited time in Toronto has stopped me from buying one as well. Maybe because I start seeing them a bunch in spring, which is when I am about to leave. The paranoia of spending my money on things I don’t need gets to me as well. But I believe having at least one in my room would make me happier. And taking care of it will give me something else to do. I think maybe I will buy at least one when I return, and see how well it holds up throughout the year and the awful cold season. So when I am unable to go outside because of it, I’ll have a sense of nature in my own room.
