For many years, as a devoted 4-H member myself, I recall training in the early spring for the upcoming “Woodsmen Competition.” Weekly gatherings with other members, often in Winston Hamilton’s driveway, contending with rain or snow, or below freezing temperatures to hone the skills needed to master the upcoming events were scheduled. So, when the day, usually evening, arrived members should have been prepared for cold, damp weather synonymous with the event, hosted by a different club, annually. Yet, despite the preparation, the chill of the evening still managed to consume many bodies, including my own.
This weekend, as I travelled to the Dal AC Campus, Bible Hill, I was prepared for the weather of the day, layered in four bundles to maintain my body heat as I was an observer to the collegiate challenge of the 38th Annual Rick Russell Loggersport Competition. In another part of the province, aspiring loggersport competitors were proving their skills at the Hants Country 4-H Competition in Three Miles Plains, hosted by Newport 4-H Club. Representing Cobequid 4-H Club and making their coaches, Stephanie and Jordan Green proud, the team competed as follows:
Single pulp saw – Evan Stone
Double pulp saw – Seth Green and Seavor Densmore
Crosscut - Seavor Densmore and Jenelle Paige
Back tank race- Evan Stone and Rumor Eagles
Waterboil - Seth Green and Rumor Eagles
Pulp toss- Everyone
The five person junior team demonstrated their commitment and training efforts by capturing second place in a category of eight teams; first place was won by Avon 4-H Club’s first team and third went to another local club, Rawdon 4-H Club.
Once the winners have been announced, the crowd awaits the naming of the 4-H members who will represent their club and combine with members from around the county to compete in May at the provincial level, as the Hants County Junior All Star Team. That event will take place on May 4th at the Dal AC Campus. From Cobequid 4-H Club two members earned places on the country team: Seth Green and Seavor Densmore, as well as Wyatt Bond, Liam Davison, and Lane Hood from Rawdon 4-H Club.
This year, the Cobequid 4-H did not enter a Senior Team, but, certainly, as these young stars progress through the 4-H program, they’ll be strong contenders as Seniors when they reach that age bracket. From Rawdon 4-H Club, Logan Bond was named to the County Senior All Star team.
Aside from the competitors, any event requires a great deal of preparation and relies on community volunteers. Two previous 4-H members from Rawdon 4-H Club were both giving back to their alumni sport this weekend, as well. While Scott Withrow was a key judge in overseeing the Pole Climb at the collegiate event, his older brother Jason Withrow was attending the 4-H event as a judge maintaining their connections to a sport they each competed in at the 4-H and collegiate levels.
