Back to School Again

by Raegan Densmore

It is September already, which seems strange to say. This summer feels like it flew by, but when I think back to the past four months, it seems like it has been a long time. Like May was ages ago. Probably because it was quite a while ago, but time feels both fast and slow. I have been in Toronto for almost a week now, although school does not start until the 8th, I wanted to enjoy the summer in Toronto briefly before going back to school. I am both excited and slightly stressed about this upcoming year; being back in the city is exciting, but being in my second last year is quite nerve wracking.

I have done quite a bit of exploring these past few days. Last night I went to Cactus club for the first time, which I was told looks like it was designed by ChatGPT (I could kind of see it), regardless, it was nice. The drinks were refreshing and the staff was friendly. Then I got to go on a night walk in the city, which I really enjoy. The temperature was warm enough so I was fine without a jacket. Which was pleasing after a long day of rain. I also went on a walk today. I decided that I wanted to try a new cafe in North York. When I first set off, it took me about 15 minutes to realize I was walking in the wrong direction, and then when I finally made it, the cafe was closed. So I went to the nearest one instead and it was delicious. I have done some other things thus far as well; I went to the Yorkdale mall, I tried a new matcha place, and I have gotten to sleep in.

Although this may sound quite peaceful, like I said, the school year is about to start and I am going into my third year. These past few days I have been trying to increase my French knowledge so I can get into the best French class that I can this semester. One of my majors requires 1.0 credits in second year language courses and French would be the best choice in a practical sense, however, there are four first year courses to take before getting into a second year course, unless I take a French placement test. With only four semesters left, I figured I should try and skip as many first year courses as possible. Thinking about how I only have four semesters left (unless I take summer courses or a 5th year) stresses me out quite a bit. But thankfully UofT has plenty of options for me so I know I will be okay. Course planning (and essay/exam season) are probably the most stressful aspects of university in my opinion. Which is why I have been trying to keep the thought of essay season which blends into exam season, out of my mind, as there is no need for that extra stress right now.

On the bright side, I am excited to move into my place this year, because I get to decorate it of course. I think of dorms like a clean canvas that I get to design. I have already started to design it in my head so I am eager to bring it to life. I am also excited to get my bags unpacked and my belongings that I left here back into my own space. Living out of two suitcases and two purses (out of four of which I brought) is not exactly that fun. In the end, despite the stress that school brings, I am excited to be back in Toronto and to start the new year.
