Elections

by Anita Benedict

I have been so busy I missed a week!

The buzz all around is about elections. We do have an upcoming Municipal election which is always interesting, and many are watching the US as they approach another election. I know we all expect or want a national election here soon, I just wish we had a Kamala Harris to rescue the scene.

I was reading a comment made by one Municipal candidate and his opponent had a similar post on Facebook. I found them refreshing and professional. It is the way all campaigns should be run. As long as it is done in real time, not just a Facebook post.

The first post read, “If you are expecting to see some evil campaign tactics, you will likely be disappointed as I can say that with all certainty that myself and my opponent are much more mature and professional than that.”

I have witnessed so many nasty and inflammatory posts that incite hatred and false pride. What a distraction from actually saying what you will do for everyone as a whole. The worst part is this is who we will vote on to run a country! I am so tired of the hatred that has been spreading, I wish more were like those in politics who choose respect and maturity. We are so lucky to have respectable folk running

at the municipal level.

I always listen to the comments from folks who say they will vote for the one who takes the time to come to my door, unless of course they don’t like the person for some reason; that may happen in small areas. I do not expect politicians to stop at every door, what a waste of fuel and our areas are huge. And at a Municipal level, I do believe it is all out of their own pocket. I personally enjoy seeing them in public, taking the time to chat with folks, I don’t mind listening to a speech, as long as it is relevant and not nasty.

With social media, we can reach people. We the people can take some responsibility to get to know a candidate, ask our questions we deem important. Call, email, approach, go to a town hall meeting when available. Listen with an open mind to everyone and choose wisely. We have great people running locally, people we have known for years, but there are things we may not know unless we ask.

The most important part is VOTE!
