Welcome to West Gore Disciple Church.

Submitted by the West Gore Disciple Church

West Gore is a tight-knit and very welcoming community that is one of the most beautiful in Nova Scotia, with lovely maple trees that, years ago, completely lined the road.

Down the road, across from the cemetery, is the West Gore Disciple Church. It is often referred to as the Church of Christ, which comes from the name of our national church, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Canada. (Canadadisciples.org)

The congregation of the Church of Christ Disciples in West Gore began as a group meeting from house to house for worship. A church building was erected in 1856 and though the building has changed, the congregation still has a firm commitment to be involved in and serve our community with Christ as our guide.

We worship together on Sundays at 11:00 am, led by our Pastor, Mike Poworoznyk (Proz-nick). We provide a Sunday School class when there are children attending. Our music leader, Nancy Doane, is always interested in acquiring new choir members.

We’re a small country church, but there seems to be something going on here nearly every day, with both church and community activities. The Garden Club and Cemetery Committee use our building regularly, and many other groups use it from time to time.

We have a Meals to Go program on the second and fourth Tuesday each month from September to June. Volunteers from the church and community prepare and deliver about 65 – 70 meals for people who request them. Each meal costs $12 and consists of a hot dish, bread or roll, and dessert. Some meals are provided at no cost for people who have challenges. Florence Miller looks after taking orders. (902-632-2048) Anyone wishing to volunteer with this ministry, please email wgdcconnect@gmail.com, or phone Debbie Weatherhead (902-632-2066).

Supporting the Hants North Community Food Bank is another way we strive to help those in our community who are finding it tough to stretch dollars these days. Another is the Hope Pantry. When a young woman approached the church about placing a

community food pantry in the church parking lot, we readily agreed. It’s a “take what you need, leave what you can” initiative that is supported by people from the church and the community. Many thanks to Natasha MacDonald for coming forward with the idea and for continuing to monitor its supplies.

A small group meets for exercises Monday and Thursday, 9 – 10:30 and Friday 8 – 9:30. We call it chair yoga, but we also do gentle seated stretch-band exercises and a walking session. We don’t have an instructor but use YouTube videos. We advise

people to participate only as they feel able.

A group of men, aptly named The West Gore Worthy Wisemen, meets every Friday morning at 10:00 for fellowship, food, and far-fetched tales.

Christian Women’s Fellowship meets at 10:00 am on the first Tuesday of each month September through June. This group is open to all women of the community and focuses on charitable work in the community and fund-raising to support numerous

broader charitable organizations, a few of which are the Hants North Food Bank, Chrysalis House, Madagascar School Project, and the World Food Program. Some of our activities include a Christmas Bazaar, a Summer Tea, and an annual women’s

retreat. We try to have an uplifting speaker at each of our meetings.

When there are five Sundays in a month, the West Gore Disciple Church joins all the churches in the area for a combined “5th Sunday Service” followed by lunch and fellowship, which is hosted by a different congregation each time.

The Maritime Area of our National Church owns a youth camp near Digby, called Johnston Christian Park. Many from our church support the camp through donations of time, talents, and money. Each year we sponsor children ages 6 – 16 to attend camps

for the various age groups. A 3-day family camp, called Disciplefest, is held in September and is an opportunity to gather with others from around the province for worship, fun, fellowship, and good food.

Everyone is welcome to join us for worship on Sunday or any of the other activities at the church. If you’d like to learn more about us, please reach out to Pastor Mike at 902-225-7777, or email us at wgdcconnect@gmail.com. Our Sunday service is shared via Zoom and to get the link, email the request to wgdcconnect@gmail.com.
