There is Philosophy in Everything

By Raegan Densmore

Do you ever feel more comfortable under warm light? Or see the current world around you differently when that fitting song comes on? When the day goes by fast even though you did nothing at all, were you happy? When I do so much all at once, and then the next day, nothing at all, it can feel a little depressing. And it's easy to be stuck in a cycle of doing nothing at all. Though, there is always something, even slight, that can change everything around and in you in the moment.

I started to really understand it when I was asked by a teaching assistant, “how do you see this?” Or “how would you add yourself to the conversation?” Perhaps when my professor told me to stand and stare at a painting for at least 20 minutes. Instead of seeing things as simply how they appear, how do they appear to you? And what sort of things can affect that? Or, does the thought really matter at all?

Everything in the world can be interpreted. But not everything needs so much attention. It's easy to see the beauty of things when you start thinking for yourself, or making your own choices, though maybe risky. But it's also important to understand that some things are not worth so much effort. When I am in my room, simply existing, and I am harsh on myself for having nothing going on. The best thought to have is to accept the break for a little while. Then the ideas will come. Or when one reads into a situation too hard, and it starts to cloud their mind, perhaps it's time to open a new window. Leave it behind, even for a moment, and accept the new breath of air.

Thought is a body of water; sometimes a clear river, or a whirlpool. Some may interpret it as a room with many windows. As humans we create meaning. We exist, and there is meaning all around us. It affects how we view things. When it's December, and you see the snow outside, suddenly the Christmas spirit awakens inside you. When your eyes are caught by a special looking rock, below you, standing out against all the rest. Or when you tell someone a joke because you believe they will laugh. It's a beautiful thing really, there is meaning being created and meaning to be found everywhere. And sometimes, especially if you are feeling down, you may just be not looking in the right places.
