Spring Ramblings

by Anita Benedict

Today the sun is shining and my mood has been pretty good. I have avoided Facebook and all the drama, mis-information, political baloney and sadness. I have become more likely to watch

reels of cats, comedians and “Say Yes to the Dress” clips enjoying the beautiful gowns.

I tidied my house, even dragged out the vacuum to give the floor a go over and maybe suck up a few of those smelly, orange bugs. The kitten wanted playing, so I had to oblige giving him an opportunity to leap into the air and show off his skills. Play chase, sure McGonagall. I will pick you up, remove you from the room so you can run back in again for me do it again.

Housework is never dull. The vacuum keeps them hidden for awhile while I get things done. Breakfast was a gluten free bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich, using the last of the home smoked bacon. Now the windows are open to get rid of the bacon smell, or is it to hide the evidence that I ate the last package; I shall not tell.

Are you bored yet? Not my usual rambling but rambling just the same.

Well, after reading so much negativity, so much fear, so much dissension; I just wanted to write about a normal spring day. As I write about the small things  that I appreciate, my own mood lifted. I still have lots of housework, but it will be there later.

I am sure I have told the story of a lovely older woman I chatted with in a hospital waiting room. I can still picture her and the surroundings and can hear her voice. It must have been a significant meeting the universe set up because it has been over 20 years since that day and I have not forgotten. We were chatting about housework and child rearing and she, in her wisdom, said her one regret was being so concerned about keeping a clean house to please other people. She enjoyed life, but thinks she missed out on the small things with her kids, or life in general.

I think of that a lot when I feel guilty about the mess, or knowing the censure I will get from people who drop by unexpected. But wait, no one drops by so what the hey diddle. They only arrive when you have let things slide.

Oh spring, I do enjoy you. I can’t wait to get my greenhouse set up so I can begin growing my seedlings and salad greens. I am feeling the need to get them started in the house. I shall put that on hold because I will attend a function at the Noel New Horizons, then church on Sunday and then a whole new week to look forward to.

My favourite project at the moment is to quilt on my mom’s quilt she started when she was 16. She embroidered it in her 50’s, I believe, and then time took her. It has finally found it’s way to the quilt frame and the wonderful quilters at Noel New Horizons will share in this precious piece of personal history. Drop by some Wednesday and add a stitch or two.
