School's In

by Angela Sanford

Where did summer go? Usually, August means catching up on some professional reading, buying any necessary back to school supplies (yes, for me, since my kids have long outgrown this tradition), and a new article or two of clothing for the upcoming year.

However, this summer I stepped away from all of these quests in light of the excitement of our summer, so it isn’t much wonder that I returned to school earlier this week feeling completely unprepared. For clarity, I was physically and mentally ready, I was organized, but I just felt strange since the routines I have completed for 29 years were not checked off the to-do list.

I am a week into my school year and the collegiality of the teachers with whom I work is in full force. They’re positive, energized, and ready to take on whatever the year may bring, already sliding into heir own routines and pumping me up right along with them.

Concerns over sufficient numbers of teaching staff across the region, let along substitute teachers for later in the season, are not being dwelled upon. Classrooms are being set up and organized for and with students, with a focus on learning intentions and expectations for everyone.

But, I am the lucky one in this scene for I get to work alongside both students and teachers in a coaching role, supporting student growth and success in secondary classrooms across Nova Family (HNRH, HERH, REC, SCA, UDS). I get to witness, first hand, the impact of strong teaching and the firm belief in our youth and their future and it brings me great delight.

Here's to a terrific year for everyone in the school community because, while some have the title of teacher, every single person in the building, in any capacity, will be a teacher this year fostering the overall development of everyone they encounter.
