October Legion Message

Hants North Legion Branch #166

ree

This past month brought us a continuation of droughts, fire bans and surprising garden harvests. Our branch also celebrated with four lovely people trying their hand at catching the Ace but

going home with a handful of cash instead! At the time of writing, the Chase the Act jackpot sits at a starting point of $13,199, but how long will it last? Draws happen every Friday night at 8:00 p.m. until the Ace is caught. With our kitchen open Friday nights from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., come for our delicious Fish and Chips, have a drink at the bar and get yourself a $5 ticket for your chance to Chase the Ace!

September not only saw Comrade Pat Ward being awarded Legionnaire of the Year but also saw us breaking ground on the long-promised Veterans’ Memorial Park – a promise made some 19 years ago when the original Monument was erected at our branch. This park will see additional veterans’ banners displayed and will provide a resting place for remembrance of our families and comrades who sacrificed their lives for our freedom today. A wonderful complement to our Harvie Brothers’ Memorial which was erected last year with wonderful help and donations from our community at large. A further fundraiser for our Veterans’ Memorial Park will be a Dime Auction on October 25th, with viewing starting at 10 a.m. and draws beginning at 4 p.m.

Why not come out for our weekly brunch from 9:00 to 11:45 a.m. try out the best breakfast in the land, and drop some dimes in the auction in support of our memorial? Just imagine the treasures you can be taking home. For anyone wishing to donate good used or new items, please reach out to the branch.

We have been given the great honour of being the only establishment to stream the matches of our comrade, The Kennetcook Kid, Wyatt Sanford. With an undefeated record, each match brings higher anticipation and more attendance as word gets out that we are the only public streaming venue. Stay tuned for upcoming matches and our kitchen specials for the match night.

Please also stay tuned for our monthly Trivia Nights with trivia master Craig Miller. October Trivia Night is coming on October 4th at 7 p.m. This is an ever-growing event as word gets out just how much fun is had! At $5 per person, bring your team of up to 6, or come solo and join a team there. There are usually 8 rounds of trivia, cash prizes, a kitchen special and, of course, along with the cash prizes, bragging rights for the winning team!

In addition to our Kitchen menu on Friday nights from 5 – 8 p.m. and our famous Saturday brunch from 9 – 11:45 a.m., we are also having a Pasta Supper on October 29th from 4 – 6 p.m. Eat in or Take Out. For $10 a plate you can skip the dishes and enjoy spaghetti with meat sauce, garlic bread and dessert! Please pre-order your meals by calling the branch at 902-369-2332. All orders must be in by October 25th.

And last, but certainly not least, our very popular country dance which occurs on the last Sunday of each month from 1 -4 p.m. with the musical stylings of Max and the Boys. With $8 admission, enjoy a shared lunch, 50/50 draw and an afternoon of fun!

We are pleased to provide you with a snapshot of what will be occurring each month at our branch, and we hope to have more community members not only see our branch as a vital part of our community but also join as a member. You will not only be joining a community, but a family of those looking to support our community and its members in remembrance of our Veterans and those currently serving. As a token of appreciation to military families, the Royal Canadian Legion offers a FREE first year of membership to the immediate family members of Veterans. Enjoy membership discounts at our bar, a number of shopping establishments and service providers, but also travel perks.

You do not have to be a member to attend our branch, and you do not have to be a member to volunteer. Royal Canadian Legion branches are always looking for volunteers. Not only does volunteering look good on a resume, but it also looks fantastic on those college applications! Did you know we have a bursary program available to student volunteers continuing with post-secondary education? Please contact our branch for more details.

Many thanks for reading and for your support throughout the years and into the future.
