Love of a Pet

by Anita Benedict

I was pleased to receive positive comments on last weeks blog, so no negative this week and that means no political talk or talk about the issues in the world. Let me tell you, instead, about the new light in my life.

My former college roommate posted that her mom had free kittens. I have always said

there is no such thing as a free kitten, because there are a lot of expenses to be had with a new pet.

I have been keeping watch on some of the rescue sites for an orange cat. The same day

that my roommate had posted about the free kittens one came up on a site in Amherst.

Do I choose a teeny tiny kitten to go with my two adult cats or do I get another cat that is already partly grown?

I chose the kitten. Off to Eastville I went in search of this farm. Not a problem with GPS.

What a gorgeous fall drive early in the morning. The light was perfect to highlight the

leaves, the water in ponds still enough to reflect a perfect image of trees. And as I pulled into the farm it was such a peaceful place.

I think I briefly met this lady with the kittens many years ago. She greeted me like a long lost friend, and we chatted as if we were. My heart was instantly lost as I looked in the kennel at the five sweet babies curled up together. Four orange and one black and white. The first kitten was surely the one, but the second kitten seemed more needy. Oh how I wanted both but since hubby wasn't aware that this one was coming, I wasn't going to push my luck.

I had forgotten what it was like to have such a small creature. Quick trip to the vet for

wormer and a weigh in; they were only one pound! I made an appointment for a future

check-up and then realized I must have kitten appropriate food so off to the store I

went. Forgot I would need a small litter pan so add to the list.

The reward at the end is kitten snuggles and play time.

In case you were wondering how the cat was introduced to hubby. The kitten,

McGonagall, had disappeared in my house. It was not in the usual hiding spots. When

hubby got home, he saw my panic and I said, "I lost something, it has four legs and is

orange." Thankfully they bonded after he found it hiding under the corner TV stand. The one thing I could not move.

So, I sit here writing this with a playful kitten with full belly nestling down for a nap. How can I put them in their bed for the night, I hate to disturb. Cats can be brats, but also a blessing. I watched faces light up with a softness when they

saw him, including the guys. There is nothing better than the love of a pet.
