Home for the Summer

by Raegan Densmore

It has now been over two weeks since I have been back in Nova Scotia. I have been enjoying it thus far; I am back in my home, I get to see my family. But it also still feels weird and different, both environmentally and mentally. Being in Toronto versus being in rural Nova Scotia are two very different experiences.

First, it is great to be back with my family. My time back with them has consisted of playing Fortnite, going to Robins, driving them to and from their sports practices and other places and attending their events. It feels weird being done with school already, but also at the same time, I forget that my siblings still have a month and a half left, so when I do remember, I enjoy making fun of them about it. I did miss making fun of them and pulling pranks as well. I am sure that they are glad to have me back for that very reason alone.

Although most of my driving has consisted of taking my brothers places, I did miss doing it. Traffic in Toronto can be crazy and it can be more convenient to walk to places. I did love to go on walks, exploring the city, and I do miss that convenience of stores being walking distance, but I still enjoy being able to drive again. Blaring music through the speakers, driving down long rural roads, being by myself, sitting in a vehicle, and simply the act of driving, I am glad to be doing it and experiencing it again.

While I do miss the plethora of cafes in Toronto, I also missed Robins. I have spent almost every day back home going to Robins. Most of it has consisted of me taking my siblings or going with my parents. It is a fun short trip to get out of the house for a bit. I enjoy being able to have their iced coffee again. Not only is it tasty, but it is cheap. Most of the good iced coffee in Toronto is expensive. Going to Robins also reminds me of the good moments of high school; my friend and I went the other day, then sat in my vehicle and talked like we used to every day. It was fun to catch up after being apart for so long. Overall,  Robins has been great for drinking good iced coffee, as well as spending time with family and friends, and having an excuse to drive somewhere.

Lastly, I am happy to be back in my bedroom. I have spent my time redecorating it with posters, tapestries, many fairy lights, and other things. I have loved being able to use candles again. I am someone who adores candles for lighting, scent, and even the sound. My residence did not allow candles, which was tragic to find out, but now I have been lighting multiple candles everyday. I enjoy having full control of my space as well as the privacy of it.

I have only been back home for two weeks, so there is still so much more to experience. Even though it has only been two, they have been great ones. I am happy to be back for the summer, for four whole months instead of just two weeks. I will use this time to spend time with family and friends, and to not have to worry about school work.
