Heaven Bound From: Elwyn Little, Bible Hill June 23, 2003

It’s been a little over 60 years since the late Elwyn Little sat on a bench one summer day at the Esplanade in Truro and watched elephants being unloaded from a trailer.

It was circus time in the hub town and he well recalls these huge animals coming down the ramp as the circus was set up behind what is now Truro Centre.

The youngsters, all from eight to 10 years old watched with fascination as the circus animals were unloaded one by one. In fact they were so intent on watching everything that was happening that they didn’t realize they were out much too long in the very hot sun.

Elwyn remembers falling over, his head swimming, as he went into what seemed like a fainting spell. A strange sensation was rushing over his entire body. He felt his spirit lift up from his body, and he seemed to be rising quickly towards heaven. He also had a terrible feeling of helplessness. He couldn’t get back down. In fact, he couldn’t do anything about what was happening to him..

The retired railwayman says that memory is as clear as if it happened yesterday.

It was so vivid and long lasting that to this day he shivers as he recalls the strange sensation.

The boys he was with dragged him into the shade. Slowly his head begin to clear and he could think once again. Today he believes he might have had a sunstroke.

Whatever happened, he believes it’s a miracle he came back to earth.

He said he hasn’t told many people this story for fear they wouldn't believe him.

He’s had a successful career, marriage and family, and, on August 11 when he and his wife Marion celebrated 50 years of marriage, they rejoiced that he was spared.
