Friends of the Lawrence House

by Angela Sanford

There’s a small but mighty group looking to make a difference in our regional tourism opportunities this summer. I would have loved to be a more active part of this group myself but they are kind enough to include me in the ongoing information messages and I am impressed with their efforts.

It’s been many a year since I last stepped inside the Lawrence House and the last few times that I made the attempt to visit, it’s doors were closed to the public. Last fall, this committee band together to give new life to the museum and to share its historical significance with the community – both locally and globally.

I was excited to see a big step forward in the advertisement of three positions for the museum this summer and while I cannot myself apply for any of the opportunities available, I am encouraging those who can to get involved. The same goes for those who cannot seek employment with the museum but want to contribute to its efforts and its success. While a core team is essential to make decisions and meet deadlines, it is necessary for the greater community to support them in numerous ways: joining committees as they arise, promoting the site to friends, family and anyone we can, and much more.

Too often committees become insular, not by choice but because the word has not spread to nearby villages. Perhaps you have a skill or talent that the Friends of the Lawrence House (or any other group) might benefit from, or even just a sprout of an idea from which collaborative efforts can make grow and hardy.

Be sure to reach out to and share your expertise, your ideas, and yourself whenever you can. If nothing else, provide words of encouragement for those making a difference and share their story whenever you can for we all need some positivity and community minded spirit to boost us.
