Family Gatherings

by Krista Vroegh

Last summer, the Mumford clan decided it was time to get together for a family reunion. Nearly 60 of us came together—some traveling long distances, others just down the road, all of us with food in hand and a story waiting to be told.

Last week, we lost the oldest member of our Mumford family tree.

And how many times have we said since then, “I’m so glad we had that gathering last year.”

We had a great time, lots of great food, games, water slide for the kids, hot tub, an awesome band,  more food and drinks

There is actually something really special about a family gathering. It’s never perfect. Someone always arrives late. Conversations overlap, and not every moment is easy.

But they remind us that belonging isn’t about perfection, It’s about being there!

It’s in the well-known laughter that rises a little too loudly. (This might be me 😊)

It’s in the stories we’ve heard a hundred times but still listen to again and again. It’s in the shared meals, where recipes carry memories as much as the flavours.

We always think we have lots of time to get together as a family but sometimes these moments are shorter than we think

And so, whether your family gatherings are large and lively or small and simple, easy or complicated—they matter.

They are places where love continues to be practiced.

Where stories are told and retold. Where presence becomes its own kind of gift.

And sometimes, only in looking back do we realize just how sacred those ordinary moments really were.
