How fortunate am I to have been born in the month of my favorite gemstone—amethyst? February is a time of transformation, a month as unique as the shifting seasons and as unpredictable as the groundhog’s forecast. Like February itself, each piece of amethyst is distinct, with its own depth of beauty.
To me, all amethyst is mesmerizing. Its violet hues have been admired for centuries as a stone of tranquility, clarity, and spiritual protection. The ancient Greeks believed amethyst could ward off drunkenness. Today, it is celebrated as a symbol of peace, inner strength, and a bridge between the earthly and the divine. However, not all amethysts are created equal. Perhaps that explains why, in my personal experience, there were a handful of occasions when my amethysts failed to ward off intoxication—maybe the stones were simply too small to have an effect!
Each amethyst holds a unique energy, but black amethyst, with its high concentration of hematite, possesses an even deeper, almost black appearance. This rare variation adds an extra layer of grounding, protection, and emotional healing to those who possess it. Its mysterious luminescence often appeals to February-born individuals, who share a deep, innate connection to the stone. Just like those born in this month, black amethyst stands apart from the rest—gravitating toward those who appreciate rarity and the extraordinary. February-born personalities tend to be highly intuitive and sensitive, and black amethyst resonates with them through its grounding and stabilizing properties.
The amethyst rings I wear—each adorned with light purple stones—remind me of the qualities this gemstone represents. They connect me to my birth month and encourage me to reflect on my own distinct nature. For years, I searched for a piece of the deeper, richer black amethyst, but it always seemed to elude me. Then, not so many years ago, after a long conversation with a colleague about gemstones and antiques, I casually mentioned that if they ever came across a vase or bowl made of this exceptional stone, I would love to know where I could find one.
The very next morning, a black amethyst vase awaited me on my desk. No note, no tag—just the silent beauty of the gift itself. But I knew exactly who had placed it there. Today, that vase sits on my favorite shelf, nestled among cherished memories and treasured keepsakes. Yet, my search continues for a black amethyst bowl, as I remain captivated by the stone’s magnetic, mysterious glow.
From a distance, black amethyst may appear solid and dark, but when touched by light, its deep violet tones gleam—revealing their hidden beauty. It reminds me that people and experiences, too, can seem one way at first glance, but when viewed with openness and understanding, their true essence shines through.
