Kobe Bryant said “to be the best, you have to work the hardest,” and Assistant Coach, Ken Webb, shared the same sentiment of the HNRH Boys Basketball team this weekend passed. Webb said, “The boys wanted it bad,” and they got exactly what they were determined to accomplish – the opportunity to prove themselves in the gold medal game on Sunday afternoon, with home court advantage, against the Lockeport Greenwave.
Over the weekend of play, the boys started their winning streak defeating the Cape Breton Highlands team 80-36, while Peyton White (Grade 10) led the team in points. The closest game of the weekend came next, when the Flames took on River Hebert, overpowering them with a 33 point spread (84-51 final) and the top scorer being Jordan Young (Grade 11). Kouper Densmore (Grade 11) netted 40 of the 108 points scored by HNRH in the championship game. This win gave the HNRH Flames domination over the Division 3* category for four of the past five years and a back-to-back win after last year’s success.
The golden team will certainly look to continue their streak next season, despite the loss of two graduating players, Ege Bayraktar, joining the team as an International Students from Turkey, and Drake White, who have left their mark with the team and will be remembered fondly by their teammates. The coaching staff, Toby White, Ken Webb, and Christian Miller, are certainly no strangers to sport and to success, exhibiting commitment and effort for the team with every practice and competition, and beyond, making strong models for the Flames to aspire to.
However, it takes more than dedicated players and coaches to host a successful tournament and the team of volunteers and fans supporting the HNRH Flames, contributing to their achievement, are also to be commended and thanked generously for their ongoing efforts.
