Architecture, Design and Minimalism (Travel)

by Raegan Densmore

I’ve always thought about it, however after coming back from Europe it has been engraved in my mind; old architecture and furniture. They are breathtakingly beautiful. As much as I would love designs of the past to come back, I know that minimalism is the trend of today. Minimalism is not a horrible concept, it's just that a part of me dies inside when I see someone strip a piece of furniture of its beauty by making it dull and white, when a gorgeous chandelier is ripped from a ceiling, where it made a statement, or when someone wants to show you how they redid their previously elegant house and you walk into rooms of every shade of white you couldn’t even imagine. No character, no life, just empty space, asylum-like.

Paris was enjoyable. The city, not as much as I thought it would be, but I will always remember my time there. Nothing about Paris is minimal at all. The city is bustling and packed. It is very beautiful though, the architecture was even breath-taking at times. Every inch of the buildings are detailed in some way, it is so fascinating. Inside the Louvre and the Palace of Versailles they had the most gorgeous ceilings. They were covered in details and art, consisting of paintings of different gods or historical figures. They told a story, it was all so incredible.

Although I am hugely into maximalism, I’m not against minimalism. If that is what feels homey to someone then that is great, that is how a home should feel. I also believe that minimalism can look nice, calming even, at times. Different styles of home, architecture, and furniture are intriguing. Its art, and if all art was the same the world would be boring. Even if minimalism is not my preference, it is the preference of others, and some people can really make the design work. The fact that people have different tastes in style is amazing, and it keeps the world unique.
