Adventure

by Anita Benedict

Despite the chilly weather off and on these last few weeks, I have to say we live in a pretty awesome province. The visitors must agree, because they come in all kinds of weather and do so with a smile.

I love playing tourist at home. I also like to know about an area to prepare for the eventual question, “What is that area/road like?” That is exactly what I did before returning to work, I went on a adventure to areas as yet undiscovered by me. The first adventure was a last-minute plan with my sis, because I wanted to visit Blue Rocks, outside Lunenburg.

I picked her up in New Minas and we took HWY 12 down to the other side of the province, past the Ross Farm that beckoned to me to go in, but that was a visit several years ago. We found our way up to the venerable Lunenburg Academy. I had seen it from a distance so wanted to view up close. Then off to Blue Rocks, not knowing what to expect.

It was a pretty drive with quiet roads and photo opportunities. We did stop at an artisan shop; a large carving of a mermaid caught our eye. The artist was a great character and his work amusing. Hunger made us hurry along to Lunenburg for lunch. I have never been a fan of driving in that town, or a fan of finding parking. Thank goodness I had a purse of change to put in the meters, I was getting a bit “hangry” and frustrated. The wait was worth it, the chowder was just enough to stave off the hunger.

“Let’s take the long way to Liverpool,” I said, “better set the GPS for La Have.” That was the next adventure! Another pretty drive and we passed the La Have Ferry waiting to fill up and set sail. I am not a fan of travelling by ferry, especially if I have to drive on! We made good time though because we were around to the other side to watch the ferry dock!

We stayed in Liverpool and explored the town and outside the town after supper. I say explore; I wasn’t sure where I was going. We found two lighthouses and I found the Dollarstore! We decided to take the highway across to Annapolis Royal with a pit stop at the Kejimkujik parking lot. That was a new adventure! The road was pretty good and had nice views.

My next adventure was with my son and his partner to Lawrence Town Beach. That was incredible. Wonderful trails, wonderful waves, wonderful company, wonderful memories. We used to live in Cole Harbour when I was a baby. Everything has changed, but there were still a few spots familiar.

My other son and I explored outside NS as well, a quick trip to Salisbury, NB to an Antique Mall we found a few years ago. Then we stopped at Fort Beausejour. It isn’t open for the season yet, but I was happy to finally see this piece of history between our provinces.

   Where shall I adventure next?
