A Birthday Reflection

My Birthday is this week and it marks a special milestone for me—I turn 55. Birthdays always make me pause for a moment and reflect, but this one feels a little different. I notice I’m thinking less about where I “should” be, and more about what actually feels right. Life has taught me that not everything needs to be rushed or worried over. Some things take time, and some things simply matter more than others
Turning 55 makes me think about gratitude. I’m grateful for all the people who have shaped my life ; both in small and bigger ways. I’m grateful for the basic needs in life. As the song by Forest Frank goes “ I got a roof and a bed, a couple groceries to stay fed, I’ve got a phone and clean water and some shoes if I wanna go farther.. Today I’ve got so much to be thankful for”.
When I heard this song the first time I thought, “Wow - that song really hits home,” and I appreciate the life I have. I am grateful for the lessons learned because those experiences have helped me grow with compassion, with patience, and, I would like to think, with humility (some may not agree with this one😉).
This birthday isn’t just about looking back; it’s also about looking ahead. I wonder what the next years will hold. I hope to continue learning and listening. Getting older isn’t just about numbers—it’s about courage, growth, and self-acceptance. It’s about stepping outside of the comfort zone. and realizing that time itself is a gift and not to postpone moments of joy.
At 55, I’m realizing that life isn’t about having everything figured out. It’s about continuing the journey—step by step, with faith, hope, and an open heart. And for that journey, I am deeply thankful. Here’s to another year of life, grace, and new adventures.
