A $5. Fiddle and Bow.

by Hattie Dyck

ree

This story began, over 80 years ago with a $5. fiddle and bow.

Johnny McLellan bought it, from Fraser Densmore.

A $5. Fiddle and Bow.

For the next 40 years, Johnny sure entertained

With that $5.00 fiddle and bow.

He then passed it down to his talented son

That $5.00 fiddle and bow.

For the past 40 years, John Afton has played

That $5. fiddle and bow

Now, he's passed it on down, to his grand-niece Lois

That $5.00 fiddle and bow.

To her, I’m sure, all the money on earth couldn’t buy

That $5. fiddle and bow.

For the next 40 years, she’ll cherish and play

That priceless fiddle and bow.

Written by the late Pat Lake, 1997. She was the daughter of the late Rita Laffin of Moose Brook. Johnny MacLellan was from East Noel. His son John Afton lived in Upper Kennetcook before moving to Bedford. They retired to Belnan.

Lois Brown is Afton’s great niece. Her father was Marvin Densmore, son of Frances Densmore who was John Afton’s sister. Afton wrote a waltz titled “The Two Sisters Waltz’’ in honor of his sisters Frances and Nellie (Hennigar).

My dear friend, Patti Laffin (Lake). She too was a talented fiddler.
